Introduction to articles on ... School ViolenceWhen just walking away doesn't work, what can cause a bullied child to resort to violence? And what happens to the bullied victims who don't respond with violence? How does the school system foster - end even enable - bullies? Why are victims so often ignored until it's too late? As we go about our day-to-day lives, a preventable cancer spreads within the walls of America's public schools. This malignancy, embraced by students and teachers alike, threatens to destroy generations of our nation's youth - unless a drastic and immediate remedy is prescribed. Our culture espouses strength and intimidation as characteristics to be admired, but society is repulsed when those dominating traits lead to acrid hate and vengeful bloodshed. The resulting anguish causes a myriad of seemingly unanswerable questions. The truth is that the answers do exist, but they require a depth of probing that society is often too busy to pursue. In the articles below, you will find an exploration of the issues that cause bullying in America's schools. More important than that are the thought-provoking solutions to which you will be exposed, solutions intended to curtail the violence our children face. Not to be missed, these articles delve into the evil that pervades in school hallways and classrooms. Consider these statistics: Thirty percent of teenagers admit to having been involved in bullying, as either victim or bully, while in a recent study published in The International Journal of Social Psychiatry, 45 percent of teachers surveyed admitted to bullying students at one time or another. What makes these statistics even more disturbing is the fact that bullying has been determined to be the cause of violence in 75 percent of school shootings, while up to 87 percent of students believe that violence in schools is primarily a way for those who have been bullied to take revenge on their abusers. The answers to this insidious problem do exist, but they aren't ones you might expect - nor are they easy to implement. Regardless, the cancer must be stopped. Our children are worth it. So, too, are the lives of those that bullied victims will continue to take if we don't do something about it. This series of articles will challenge you in ways you never imagined.
